Chemical compounds and microbial metabolites

Chemical analysis is relevant in many applications ranging from assessment of chemical constituents of foods and feeds to microbial metabolite profiles in gastrointestinal tract. Our laboratory is equipped with modern analytical GC, GC-MS and LC (FLD, RID, PDA) instruments and can provide both qualitative and quantitative analysis of various types compounds in complex matrices. In addition to analyses based on gas and liquid chromatography and spectroscopy, we apply advanced ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent analysis) techniques using HRP conjugate (horseradish peroxidase) combined with TMB (tetramethylbenzidine) and SDS-page (sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacryamide gel electrophoresis) gels. Combined with efficient extraction techniques (LLE, SPE, SPME), these analytical capabilities provide us with reliable chemical data from a multitude of biogenic materials.

Our routine measurements include profiling of microbial metabolites, such as short chain fatty acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and esters, as well as indole, skatole and cresol, but also extend to various types of analysis for carbohydrates, sugars, proteins, amino acids and fatty acids. The potential benefits of chemical measurements are thoroughly evaluated at an early phase of all our projects and the experimental setup is always adjusted to take into account the aspects related to analytical chemistry.
